7th Conference of Natural Sciences and Technical PhD Study Programmes at UJEP
7th StudKon 2024
June 24 – 25, 2024
Centrum of natural and technical science at UJEP Campus
About StudKon
The conference is intended mainly for doctoral students of the study programmes “Environmental Chemistry and Technology” (FŽP UJEP), “Applied Nanotechnology” (PřF UJEP), “Applied Ion Technology” (PřF UJEP) and “Computer Methods in Science and Technology” (PřF UJEP). However, doctoral students from other faculties, especially the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FSI UJEP), relevant natural and technical science programmes, and early-career researchers are all welcome and encouraged to join. In 2024, the scope of the conference is expanded to include students of the new doctoral programme “Landscape Reclamation and Ecosystem Services” (FŽP UJEP) for the first time. The focus of this new doctoral programme is on educating experts in the field of landscape, ecosystems and their services, especially in terms of human impact and climate change. As part of the internationalization of StudKon, doctoral students from the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava ,Slovakia will participate.
Another innovation compared to last year is that the StudKon will be a two-day event.
The conference scope is becoming very interdisciplinary reflecting the scientific evolution of the doctoral programmes at the Faculty of Environment and Faculty of Science UJEP. Topics cover emerging scientific fields such as preparation and characterization of (nano)materials and their applications, green and sustainable chemistry, chemical and physical modifications of materials, chemistry and physics of materials, environmental and analytical chemistry, phytoremediation and biotechnology, modelling in chemistry, physics and materials, materials for energy applications, and other related topics. This year for the first time topics for landscape reclamation, such as anthropogenic influence on landscape, ecosystem services, human impact and climate changes, topics related to soil environment and brownfields and their remediation, ecological indicators for archaeology, sustainability, are also welcomed.
Contributed papers (talks) and poster presentations are accepted for the conference. The event will be attended by supervisors and consultants, members of the doctoral councils, and invited experts from other institutes (for example Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences).
The main aim of StudKon is to provide students with the opportunity to practise and improve scientific presentation skills and to obtain constructive/critical feedback on their dissertation topic in a friendly environment. An integral part of StudKon is a knowledge exchange among doctoral students, supervisors, senior researchers and members of doctoral councils.
The conference is held in English.
Prizes for the best talks and posters will be given.
StudKon is a mandatory part of the Environmental Chemistry and Technology curriculum (FŽP UJEP).

Competitions
Traditionally, M. Broul Prize for the best talks and posters will be awarded.
Miroslav Broul Prize:
The conference will also include a competition for the best oral presentations and posters. The committee, composed of members of the PhD councils and other invited experts, will evaluate the scientific level and originality of the work as well as the students’ contribution and their abilities to engage with the audience and to defend their work during scientific discussion. The committee will also take into account the student’s year of study. First-year students, who will mostly present the vision, strategy and goals of their ambitious projects can win over research-oriented presentation of older colleagues. The first three places will receive financial reward (in the form of an extraordinary scholarship) in the amount of 10, 7.5 and 5 thousand CZK. Who was Miroslav Broul? – document in Czech
The points for evaluation are:
- Scientific level: the relevance of the topic to the national and word context, originality, ambition, quality of hypothesis and design of the approach for their solving.
- Student’s contribution: Passion for work, the ability to present results, realistic estimation of their impact, ability to analyze results, relevant conclusions or solutions of problems
- Formal skills: Speaking and presentation skills, technical and visual aspects of the presentations including language level, and adherence to the lecture time.
- Discussion: demonstration of the knowledge of presented topics and relevant topics, the ability to respond to questions, defending presented results, highlighting the strengths of their work.
