5th Conference of Natural Sciences and Technical PhD study programmes at UJEP

5th StudKon 2022

June 13, 2022

Green Lecture Hall (Multifunctional centre at UJEP Campus)

About StudKon

The conference is intended mainly for PhD students of the study program Environmental Chemistry and Technology (FŽP), Applied Nanotechnology (PřF) and Computer Methods in Science and Technology (PřF). However, PhD students from other faculties such as the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FSI), relevant natural and technical science programmes, undergraduate students and early-career researchers are all welcome to join.

The conference scope includes the preparation and characterization of (nano)materials and their applications, nanotechnology, chemical and physical modifications of materials, chemistry of materials, environmental analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry and pollution of the environment, phytoremediation and biotechnology, modelling in chemistry, physics and materials, and other related topics.

Oral or poster presentations are accepted for the conference. The event will be attended by supervisors and consultants, members of PhD councils, and invited experts from other institutes. Prizes for the best talks and posters will be given.

StudKon is a mandatory part for PhD students at FŽP UJEP (Environmental Chemistry and Technology, Environmental Analytical Chemistry). The main aim of the conference is to provide students with the opportunity to practise scientific presentations and to obtain constructive feedback from other participants on their PhD topics in a friendly environment. An integral part is a live knowledge exchange among PhD students, supervisors and members of PhD councils. The conference will be held in English.

This year, the INVITED TALK will be given by Prof. Petr Svoboda (PřF UK / Institute of Molecular Genetics CAS) on the topic of ethics in science (data falsification, manipulation and plagiarism). Hower, this talk will be in Czech.
A social event will take place in the evening.

Competitions

Traditionally, M. Broul Prize for the best talks and posters will be awarded.

Miroslav Broul Prize:
The conference will also include a competition for the best oral presentations and posters. The committee, composed of members of the PhD councils and other invited experts, will evaluate the scientific level and originality of the work as well as the students’ contribution and their abilities to engage with the audience and to defend their work during scientific discussion. The committee will also take into account the student’s year of study. First-year students, who will mostly present the vision, strategy and goals of their ambitious projects can win over research-oriented presentation of older colleagues. The first three places will receive financial reward (in the form of an extraordinary scholarship) in the amount of 10, 7.5 and 5 thousand CZK. Who was Miroslav Broul? – document in Czech

The points for evaluation are:

  • Scientific level: the relevance of the topic to the national and word context, originality, ambition, quality of hypothesis and design of the approach for their solving.
  • Student’s contribution: Passion for work, the ability to present results, realistic estimation of their impact, ability to analyze results, relevant conclusions or solutions of problems
  • Formal skills: Speaking and presentation skills, technical and visual aspects of the presentations including language level, and adherence to the lecture time.
  • Discussion: demonstration of the knowledge of presented topics and relevant topics, the ability to respond to questions, defending presented results, highlighting the strengths of their work.

List of oral and poster presentations

Students with talk are given in the programme higher. Other students will present their topic by poster.

Registration

Students will register for the conference by sending the abstract to studkon@ujep.cz. The deadline for the abstract submission is May 18, 2022. Students should use the Abstract Template available by clicking here where all details are given. Please, indicate your preference for either poster or talk in the registration email. These are ONLY preferences; the PhD councils and the conference committee will decide about the final form of your presentation. The final decisions will be announced by the end of May 2022. Please, send your abstract in Word format only.

Guidelines for authors

The conference, including oral and poster sessions, is held in English. Registration is based on the abstract submission (see above). We strongly recommend consulting your abstracts as well as presentation/poster with your supervisor and/or consultant(s).

Oral presentations. The time allowance is 15 minutes + 5 minutes for discussion. The oral sessions will be managed by a chairman. The authors should bring their presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. Presentations will by uploaded during the registration or during coffee breaks preceding a given session. Authors can also send presentations electronically beforehand.

Poster presentations. Poster session will start during the day by a short oral introduction of the topic to the audience (max. 1 minutes + 1-2 PowerPoint slides). The introductory session time will be specified in the final program. The introduction aims to entice the audience to your poster. The poster should be A0 (portrait oriented). Poster holders will be available during the entire day. Authors should hang their posters well in advance of the session.

Venue & catering

The conference will take a place at UJEP Campus in the Multifunctional centre.
